A work of art in public space by Thorsten Goldberg for the city Bergen/NO

The city railway Bergen (Norwegian Bybanen i Bergen) is a rail-based urban transport in the Norwegian city Bergen. Supported by KORO (Public Art Norway), it has its own artistic program that promotes art projects in public space.

To artistically enhance a meeting point for people of different backgrounds, in 2009 a competition for an public artwork was announced, at which over 100 artists participated.

Thorsten Goldberg`s percent for art project, awarded by a jury, was officially opened on the 15th of June 2012.

A rectangular, 416 m2 large, reflected polished stainless steel surface covers the rocky shore area of an inner city fjord together with a small island. It is aligned exactly with the coordinate system of the Earth and describes the area between 60°22’52.55″N / 60°22’51.8″N and 05°20’01.24″E / 05°20’02.32″E.

60°N 05°E (encased waterside) is a post- and reshaping of the landscape at the same time. Due to the pulse of light which illuminates the perforation of individual triangles, the technoid surface is overlaid with a soft wave motion and places the crystallin structure seemingly in motion: a silvery, on the landscape lying cloth that seems to float because of the slowly rising and falling light. The work combines different realities: on the one hand the large area reflects the sky and the surrounding area, capturing them on the surface. On the other hand, the original shore area of the fjord is removed from the eye of the observer.

AND HONEY UPON HAWTHORN GROWS, 2013

An art project in public space by Thorsten Goldberg for the City of Danzig (Gdańsk)

The South Baltic project called „Wind energy in the BSR 2″ (short: WEBSR2) is a consortium of experts from several countries (Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany) with the aim to promote and advance the expansion of wind energy in the partner countries.

In order to anchor the wind energy in public consciousness specifically in these three cities of Kalmar, Rostock and Gdańsk, Thorsten Goldberg was commissioned with a work of art in public space.

On the 13th of June 2013 the art work „AND HONEY UPON HAWTHORN GROWS“, located close to the sea, in the Ronald Reagan Park in Gdańsk, was presened to the public.

Similar to a lantern above curved mast rises from the ground. Like the leaves of a plant solar cells are raising towards the sun and a five-bladed rotor turns to the wind. With the gained energy the lamp, which is placed at the highest point in the calyx-like funnel, is being operated.

Letters wander upwards the stalk and form the Polish title of the work „I MIÓD NA GŁOGU ROŚNIE“, in English „AND HONEY UPON HAWTHORN GROWS“. That is a part of a sentence from the english Cockaigne story, announcing a promise of an country, in which there is no more energy needed – a perhaps soon realized utopia.

A work of art by Katrin Korfmann in the public space of the city Hilversum

The Dutch city of Hilversum built in 2009 a 100-meter long new tunnel for cyclists and pedestrians. The tunnel is located under the rail tracks and connects the northern and southern part of the city at the intersection Oosterengweg-Alt Amersfoorstseweg.
To artistically enhance the tunnel and to lead the city`s two peaces back together, the city made an art competition for a work of art in public space.
With her project „Seesaw“, an interactive light installation, the Berlin-born Katrin Korfmann won the competition.
Along the tunnel wall set lamps are projecting conical beams on the adjacent walls. Using motion sensors, the lamps respond to the presence and movement of passers-by and send different colored light at certain intervals. The number of turned on lamps corresponds to the number of pedestrians and cyclists who pass through the tunnel at a certain time. The light travels through the tunnel, bouncing from one lamp to the next and so accompanies the passers-by on their way. When the tunnel is empty, a single light is moving stealthily up and down in order to attract the next passer-by. In that manner, in a nearly playful way an exchange and the contact between the infrastructually underdeveloped area on the one and the “better” residential area on other side of the tracks are being encouraged.

More than moments, 2012-2013

More than moments, 2012-2013

An art project by André Wagner for Mobimo Management AG in Zürich

In spring 2012, the young German photo artist André Wagner has been invited by  MOBIMO to photograph the neighbourhood under construction located “at the  Pfingstweidpark“ in Zürich-West. On the trail of the company`s idea, Wagner artistically and visually explored the area in the transition period to a vibrant urban neighbourhood.

The reflection of time serves Wagner as a guideline. Not only the present is to be captured but it should also simultaneously serve as future documents of the changing contemporary happenings. So each work contains the three basic levels of time: past / present / future – extended by the meaning layers of history / development / progress.

The selected artistic method in the form of long exposure times with its unique artistic character makes processes of change visible. Created photographs with stunning details evoke memories and have a special narrative moment. In addition, the motives exude a magical effect and capture the multi-layered sentiment as well as a unique atmosphere of the new quarter.

André Wagner

Trained as a photographer, André Wagner/ DE *1980 creates pictures that are informed by social movements, architecture and nature. He photographs the natural movement of light producing a surrealistic effect of energy that when combined with the rotation of the earth as André puts it “leads man to delve into the mystic knowledge down deep in his soul.” His unique gift is the sensual way of perceiving internal and external phenomena of a situation. With virtuoso camera technology he produces authentic images that are not digitally manipulated. His atmospheric landscape photographs are romantically inclined and picturesque in their effect. Wagner often summarizes single works into series. So the moment depicted is deliberately loaded with content that rise above the purely aesthetic result.

As David Hernández de la Fuente, Author and Poet, Spain states, “The real journey is that of a man who is thirsty to travel towards his own center who leaves an unforgettable impression on the retina of a new view of the world and its elements.”

An artwork by Katrin Korfmann for the housing company Woonwijze in Vught, Netherlands

Woonwijze is a Dutch housing company. They  wanted a work of art on the outer side of their main headquarters in Vught. With this public art project Katrin Korfmann was commissioned.
Korfmann’s installation consists of a 2 meter by 2,80 meter glass plate, which is installed on a window niche about 3 meters high on a generous, postmodern building.  On this vertically positioned plate several precious Koi carps can be seen, cavorting on the building façade.
The viewer of the work experiences a moment of irritation: although he looks up, at the same time he looks down into an ornamental pond. This paradox is even further reinforced by the backlight of the work, which gives the impression that the pond is illuminated from below: by the light, the golden glowing carps move closer to the surface, while the water seems even more profound. The work invites us to reflect on our culture of status symbols and on our relationship to nature.

An artwork by Katrin Korfmann for the Ronald McDonald Sport Center in Amsterdam

The Ronald McDonald Sport Center for disabled children and teenagers in Amsterdam was built in 2010. Both a conference room as well as an exercise room should be designed artistically. The commission was given to the artist Katrin Korfmann, which realized an artwork for the specific building.

Her installation consists of mostly wall-sized photographs showing from the bird’s perspective both disabled children and “normal” teenagers in water or on soft gym mats. This angle leads to an image where the children are able to move without any restriction. For each picture Korfmann made several different shots of the same place and collages them together in a new image, which transfers the movement in time. The several meters long panoramic installation represents a (virtual) space, which refers to visions and utopias: the expression of joy and freedom experienced by children and teenagers is transmitted to us and let make the observer the difference between disabled and non-disabled people forget.

An art project by Nikolaus Eberstaller for Mole West on the shores of lake Neusiedel (Austria)

In 2004 Karolyi & Ehrengruber opened the Bar & Gourmet-Restaurant Mole West on the shore of the lake Neusiedel. During the construction Nikolaus Eberstaller was commisioned with an site-specific art work, which visually and with specific content should take up the exclusive position of the lake.
Eberstaller spans a 300 square-meter printed film on the ceiling and the exterior facade of the building (Architekten Halbritter & Hillerbrand). The subject is an abstract marbling of orange and white tones, which can be associated with cloudy structures and at the same time calm waters. As a basis for the art project served him the idea of milk poured in tea. The choice of this motif has two effects: first, the movement of the wave striking the building is captured, which leads into the interior of the restaurant, and on the other hand, the theme of culinary delights is visually represented. The large, partially indirectly illuminated installation evokes associations referring to northern ligths and sets the strict geometric lines of the building towards an amorphous surface. In addition Eberstaller designed the company logo, which again transfers the reflection of the water in the font.
